Why I teach study skills
What exactly do I do?
This is my most frequently asked question.
Have you or your child ever sat in front of piles of books working hard for hours on end, to be both, disappointed and discouraged when the test results don’t reflect all the hard work?
I call this 'feel-good' work. The parent feels good seeing their child working; the child feels good doing it, but it is entirely ineffective. This is a common problem that I can fix by teaching highly effective study skill techniques which don't just 'feel-good' but do good.
I'm a scientist that used to tutor until a physics assignment changed everything. Instead of teaching my student the content, I focused on how she could learn it herself - she got her first distinction. We continued by just focusing on the study skills she needed. Months later, I received a phone call from her on her way to university - I had never heard a student so happy.
Study skills are indispensable and rarely taught in schools. I am continually learning about learning techniques, reading the latest studies in cognitive science. But more importantly, my job is to make my students believe that they can achieve far more than they think they can.
My Tutoring Expertise
Having a 2:1 Bsc Microbiology and an MPhil show my academic success, but academics don't mean that I can teach. It is, in fact, my failures academically, rather than the achievements, that enable me to relate to how the student may feel. I've known what it is like to study with and without having these skills. That's why I now teach study skills techniques, so no student has to study unprepared like I did. The study skills I teach can be applied to all fields and stages of study, from secondary school and beyond.
